Adult Hosting NewsTEMPE, AZ — Vaughn Liley, a long-time business associate of ICM Registry’s Stuart Lawley who now represents the company, faced vocal online adult operator attendees at The Phoenix Forum over .XXX on Saturday. The mostly critical crowd lashed out at ICM Registry’s .XXX plan, which was approved by ICANN last month, and at Liley, who was unable to answer a number of crucial questions posed at him such as final .XXX policies regarding the exact start up plans such as the Sunrise Trademark qualification rules and actual retail prices for .XXX domain names, among others.

.XXX already has 800,000 pre-reserved domain names, according to ICM Registry, which is posed to roll it out in September after two sunrise periods for adult companies, including one for website trademark owners. The seminar, called “.XXX — Now What” and moderated by Wasteland’s Colin Rowntree, included Liley, who was joined by numerous online adult execs, a lawyer and a journalist, including Pink Visual’s Allison Vivas, GEC Media’s Gregory Dumas, Mikandi’s Chris Lewicki, Wildline’s Chris Miller, journalist Tom Hymes and attorney Jeffrey Douglas. FSC Launches Anti .XXX Campaign

Adult HostingCANOGA PARK, CA — The Free Speech Coalition announced Friday that it is launching an anti-.XXX campaign and urging adult online businesses not to buy into the newly-approved .XXX sTLD.

“Collectively, adult businesses understand that .ICM’s .XXX is bad for the adult entertainment industry. FSC is launching this campaign thus continuing its effort to rid the industry of this hazard. We are encouraging adult businesses to Just Say ‘NO’ to .XXX,” FSC Executive Director Diane Duke said.

ICANN Approves .XXX

Adult HostingSAN FRANCISCO — The ICANN board voted today to proceed with ICM’s .XXX sTLD despite the advocacy of the Free Speech Coalition and a wide range of adult industry leaders. This decision represents the first time the ICANN Board has disregarded advice from its Government Advisory Committee (GAC).

The board voted 9-3, with four board members abstaining, to approve the .XXX sTLD.

Ira Magaziner, one of the founders responsible for creating ICANN under the Clinton administration, Vint Cerf, the past Chair of the ICANN Board, Larry Strickling, the Under Secretary for the U.S. Department of Commerce and former US President Bill Clinton all spoke of the absolute necessity of the ICANN Board listening to its Government Advisory Committee. U.S. Official Wants More ICANN Transparency

Adult Web HostingWASHINGTON — The Obama administration wants ICANN’s decision-making process to be more “accountable” and “transparent.” Commerce Department Assistant Secretary Larry Strickling said the nonprofit group that overseas Internet domain names needs to do more to explain the reasoning for its decisions and to heed the advice of national governments.

“We still have work to do to make the reality of ICANN meet the vision,” Strickling said. In some areas, he said ICANN’s efforts “remain incomplete.” Strickland’s comments come on the heels of a rift between ICANN and national governments over the rules for approving new top-level domain names. Hundreds of applications for these suffixes, one of which includes .gay, are expected later this year once the process has been finalized. Read more

ICANN Chair Remains Unclear On How Board Will Vote on .XXX

Peter Dengate Thrush, chairman of ICANN’s board, told reporters this week that the panel already has “had a reasonable exchange of papers with the GAC” and that he’s not clear how the board will vote. “I dont speak for them,” he said. Read more

Bill Clinton to Speak at ICANN Meeting

The following day the Free Speech Coalition plans to rally with industry professionals against ICM Registry’s .XXX proposal, which likely will be put to a vote at its general board meeting on Friday. The rally around the Westin starts at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, which also coincides with St. Patrick’s Day, one of the most festive annual days in San Francisco.
